Lisa Ronson - 'Emperors of Medieval Japan'

Lisa Ronson, daughter of David Bowie's legendary guitarist Mick Ronson, is to release her debut solo album 'Emperors of Medieval Japan' in November 2015. 'Emperors of Medieval Japan' features special guest appearances from an inspirational line-up of prestigious rock musicians: Reeves Gabrels (The Cure, David Bowie), Earl Slick (John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Bowie) and Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople, Queen) joining guitarist programmer Paul Cuddeford (Ian Hunter, Bob Geldof) and saxophone player Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey, Gallon Drunk, Yoko Ono). Ronson's rare sound is a dynamic convergence of synth-pop and alternative rock with dystopian and existentialist lyrics. Pioneered by Ronson, this contemporary musical style is referred to by her fans as Post Synthetic, an emerging musical movement in London. Fresh back from the recent Holy Holy tour where she performed guest vocals as part of the Bowie associated super group with her father's fellow Spiders From Mars bandmate Woody Woodmansey and producer Tony Visconti, Lisa is no stranger to the stage and recording process. Her own former group The Secret History, a New York based indie art/ pop group, gained success and achieved widespread critical acclaim throughout the US and garnered a cult following in the UK.

'Emperors of Medieval Japan' can be pre-ordered on CD or limited edition white vinyl from Amazon UK.

Lisa is making her solo performance debut on 15 Sep 2015 at the Borderline in London, with Reeves Gabrels on guitar. Tickets are available from TicketWeb. She will also support Reeves Gabrels on his UK tour from 1 Oct through 15 Oct 2015.

MickRonsonfest - Sat 27 April 2013

The ICA will survey the career of the iconic guitarist and producer Mick Ronson (26 May 1946 – 29 April 1993) on the eve of the 20th anniversary of his death, in partnership with his sister Maggi, and assess his impact on the history of popular music. His importance and influence are often understated; this event will amplify the role of this brilliant and unassuming musician in making some of the best rock/pop records of all time.

“Michael was happy when he was creating music regardless of who it was with and whether or not he was going to make a profit or be successful. Michael was a real artist; he knew just what to do and what was needed to turn a basic song into a work of art and a piece of music that would stand the test of time. He was a man of very little ego but plenty of dreams”. Maggi Ronson

Ronson is best known for his collaboration with David Bowie on the albums The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups, where his robust guitar playing, arranging and multi-instrumental talent helped to propel Bowie to stardom. Bowie and Ronson’s embrace on Top of the Pops in 1972 is one of the defining cultural moments of the 70s.

Mick Ronson enjoyed a solo career comprising of three albums and a long-term association with Ian Hunter with whom he made many records and toured extensively. After Mick’s death, Hunter recorded the moving tribute to his friend Michael Picasso. Ronson has recorded and toured with many other artists including Bob Dylan, John Cougar Mellencamp and Roger Daltrey.

As a producer, Ronson jointly produced Lou Reed’s much loved album Transformer with David Bowie. Later production highlights include one of Morrissey’s finest solo albums, Your Arsenal, the influential punk/new romantic crossover album Ghosts of Princes in Towers by Rich Kids and Whomanfoursays by Dalbello.

The programme for MickRonsonfest is composed of:

  • 1pm to 5pm (including interval at 3pm) – Premiere screening of ‘The Mick Ronson Memorial Concert’ from 1994 with introduction by Maggi Ronson and talks from special guests including Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols, Rich Kids).
  • 5:30pm to 6:30pm – Record Producer: Legendary Sex Pistols bass player Glen Matlock discusses Mick Ronson’s work and legacy as a record producer with Tom Wilcox, Associate Curator at the ICA, followed by a performance by Matlock of a selection of songs by influential New Wave band Rich Kids. NOTE: The ‘Ronson at the Rainbow’ screening has been canceled.
  • 6:30pm to 7:30pm – Mick Ronson DJ set in the Bar from Zoe McLeod and Dave Chin.
  • 7:30pm - Comedy from Hull comedienne Lucy Beaumont, then a set from John Hutchinson, touring guitarist with Bowie and Ronson, followed by the premiere performance by Maggi Ronson and special guests of her new album Sweet Dreamer, a tribute to her brother’s life and music.
  • 9pm to Midnight – Mick Ronson DJ set in the Bar from Stephen Escritt and Tom Wilcox
  • An exhibition of rare Mick Ronson photos, letters and press cuttings from the Ronson family archive

Visit the ICA's information page for further details.

MickRonsonfest will be the fourth in a series of festivals held at the ICA concentrating on the work of a specific musical artist, following on from the success of Bowiefest and Princefest in 2012, and Smithsfest being held on 29 and 30 March 2013. Future ‘fests’ to be held at the ICA include Blondiefest in July 2013 and Iggyfest in Autumn 2013.

The ICA, Institute of Contemporary Arts, is a not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary arts centre established in 1947 by a collective of artists, poets and writers to showcase and champion contemporary culture across the broadest range of art forms. Housing two galleries, two cinemas, a theatre, reading room, bookshop and café/bar, the ICA has been at the forefront of cultural experiment since its formation and has presented some of the most radical exhibitions, artists, films, music and thought to have shaped our world. It exists today as a committed proponent of contemporary arts practice and new ideas, presenting an international and contextualised programme of work in new and experimental frameworks across a variety of platforms. The Institute of Contemporary Arts is supported by Arts Council England.

BBC To Air 'Jean Genie' On 21 Dec 2011

UPDATE! After the BBC news story regarding 'Jean Genie' generated more that 100,000 hits in the first two days, the BBC will now air the rediscovered version of 'Jean Genie' on the Top of the Pops 2: Christmas Special from 7:30pm - 9:00pm on Wednesday 21st December 2011.

Rare Spiders From Mars Film Rediscovered

[Karen 'Gilly' Laney, Ultimate Classic Rock] David Bowie's long lost performance of 'Jean Genie' on England's 'Top Of The Pops' television show has surfaced 38 years after its original broadcast, thanks to a retired cameraman. 69 year old John Henshall has retained a copy of this rarer than rare video performance for all these years and BBC news reported that "I just couldn’t believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn’t be mad enough to wipe a tape like that," says Henshall. Yet, that’s exactly what happened. The BBC were notorious for wiping many tapes back in the day, and given it only aired once in January of 1973, fans have often hoped of finding someone who pointed an 8mm home movie camera at the screen to catch it, as there was no VHS in those days. This outcome however is far better, as Henshall filmed the performance using Telefex Fisheye lenses which he designed himself. Wanting a copy for his own show-reel, he asked the producers for a personal copy. Now, nearly four decades later he realized that he possessed a piece of television history. Henshell went to Westpoint Television in London to view the footage and amazingly, there it was, in full broadcast quality. The footage was unveiled on Sunday (Dec. 11) at an event held by the British Film Institute. As for those of us who couldn't attend the screening, plans for a BBC4 documentary called 'Tales Of Television Centre' will broadcast in the new year. The anticipation of seeing a crystal clear performance of Bowie and The Spiders From Mars performing 'Jean Genie' during the height of their careers, certainly gives the "loves to be loved" lyric a brand new meaning.

The Week That Was

This is a recap of the wonderful week we all had in London at Hammersmith Apollo. Seeing so many friends that I hadn’t seen for years was fantastic. Some of you I recognized and some of you only after we spoke. Well it has been over 20 years! I also was thrilled to meet new friends and fans of Mick’s that have been so supportive of my work on the documentary I am making about him. It warmed my heart and I want to thank all of you for that support. It was a great chance for Sue Ashworth and Sunny Singh of Spontanutiy films, the company I am making the documentary with, to see first hand how loyal Mick’s fans are, they were knocked out.

One of my favorite parts, was to see my lovely daughter Lisa perform with Mott. The outpouring of affection when Lisa was introduced at the shows gave her chills and again made her realize what a special man her Father was. Truly amazing!

Tears and smiles all week for us and once we checked into the hotel for the last couple of days party mode took over and neither one of us slept much. Lisa missed her flight as she was napping in the airport lounge. She had been up all night and left the hotel at 5am the morning after the final show. My poor darling only just made it back to classes that afternoon. Notwithstanding we both agree it was the best week ever. Thank you all for being there and making that week so special.

Come on Mott do it again!!

Much Love

The Secret History/Lisa Ronson

The Secret History has signed on with the Le Grand Magistery to release their debut recording, a 5 song EP tentatively titled Desolation Town. The EP will feature tracks previewed on-line in their early forms, plus the single 'It’s Not The End of World, Jonah'.

The Secret History is the band formed in 2007 by ex- My Favorite singer/songwriter Michael Grace Jr., and his decade long collaborators; guitarist Darren Amadio, bassist Gil Abad, drummer Tod Karasik, and keyboardist Kurt Brondo. The roots of this band grew out of the ashes of that previous project, which established them as cult heroes on the margins of indie music, as did the loosely thematic group of songs Grace wrote revolving around a fictional rock group called The Haunted Hearts, which may or may not be composed of ghosts. The Secret History crystallized when Grace met Lisa Ronson, after she answered an ad in The Village Voice seeking a 'Female Singer/Tragic Cult Figure.' The addition of Erin Dermody on 'girl group' harmonies completed the band. (For the latest details check out the band's MySpace page)
